Whether you arent sure what you want from your college experience and just need to learn more, or you know exactly what you want and need to see if a particular school matches up, its important to head into the session with some guided preparation, which you can learn more about in Part One of this series. Next, youll need to come up with a list of relevant and important questions to ask. If the session includes discussions led by a student, you may want to ask more personalized questions about what he or she likes most about the campus experience, or what aspects he or she might change if given the chance. There will more than likely be official university representatives at the info session as well, so be sure to identify more formalized questions you may have about the school (that cant easily be found on its website) as well. Below are some example questions to get you started in a number of categories: Academics What kind of support services are available? What would you say the colleges academic strengths are? Weaknesses? What are the core class requirements? How quickly do I need to decide on a major? What sets this school apart from others? Whats an average class size in the smallest major? In the biggest? Overall? What percentage of courses are taught by a teaching assistant? Whats the advising experience like? How easy is it to switch majors / choose classes? Residential Life What percentage of students are commuter students? Do freshmen live in separate housing from upperclassmen? Do upperclassmen typically move off-campus, and what are the challenges to finding off-campus housing? Are meal plans mandatory? What are some alternative dining options for those with dietary restrictions, food allergies, etc.? Which facilities have been improved in the last five years? Which ones do you plan to improve? What do you think the most difficult adjustment for students is? Social What percentage of students are part of the Greek system? Whats a typical weekend like for on-campus students? How important are sporting events to the campus life? What clubs are available and what percentage of your students participate in clubs or intramurals? How many different schools are there within the college? How easy would it be to transfer from the School of Engineering to the Liberal Arts School, for example? Resume Builders What are your job placement rates? Graduate school placement rates? What services do you provide to graduating students to help them find jobs? What study abroad opportunities do you offer? What opportunities are available for jobs, research positions, or internships on campus? Application Process What scholarships does your school offer? Can you tell me a little bit about the financial aid trends for students here? How many receive financial aid, and what kind? What advice would you give about applying to this school? How does the application process here differ from that of other schools? Campus Safety and Resources How can students reach campus safety officers? What are the general safety policies on campus? Off campus? Whats the area around the campus like in terms of safety? What safety resources do you offer that other schools dont, or that you think are particularly notable? How does health care work for students? Be sure to take clear notes on the answers you receive so you can compare them with other schools later. BobbiM May 20, 2015 If you are considering hiring a private tutor for your child or if you need one, do not think that you are alone.  According to Dr. Sandi Ayaz, executive director of the National Tutoring Association, private tutoring in the U.S. alone has “exploded tenfold” over the past eight years. That is a tremendous growth increase!  The reasons for looking into private tutors are almost as many as there are kids.  Some parents hire tutors to help their children overcome academic obstacles, others contract with tutors to encourage and challenge their children in ways that might not be possible in a classroom setting, and still others are looking for tutors to fill in gaps or add to the knowledge their kids are getting in the classroom. Whatever the objective of the tutoring may be, it’s important for parents and students to take the time to find and hire a tutor who will work well with the students  learning style and personality.  Here are some great questions to help make sure that that you find a tutor that is right for you: Questions to Ask Private Tutors Before Starting:  1. What is your teaching style? Students  learn in a variety of styles and at different paces, which is why it’s impossible for teachers in schools  to structure their classroom lessons to match each individual student’s preferred learning style. The right private tutor, however, can adapt lessons to cater to your child’s strengths whether he is an auditory learner (learns best by listening), visual learner (learns best through sight) or a kinesthetic learner (learns best through experience). Before you hire a tutor, make sure to find out if he can structure lessons in a format that works with  your child’s preferred learning style.  And if you dont know your childs learning style, check in with his teachers and current school for an assessment or update on that information.  It will be a huge help for both you and any tutor you finally work with. 2. What is your tutoring plan for working with  my child? While this is a pretty open ended question and is difficult for someone who has not yet met your child or even seen examples of their  school work, the response will reveal the tutor’s thought process for diagnosing your child’s needs and creating a plan to achieve the desired results. The right tutor will have a strategy, and may even have specific methods, for identifying problem areas and understanding the child’s learning behavior. An effective tutor recognizes the importance of working with the student (and in some cases, the parents) to establish performance improvement goals that are both measurable and attainable.  Bottom line open ended questions like this show the tutors comfort level and confidence with respect to their ability to work with your child.  Finding that out early on is critical. 3. Why do you tutor? Successful tutoring is really about developing  a productive learning relationship between any private tutor and their students. Those tutors who are most effective are passionate about teaching and are able to derive value from seeing their students succeed. While many tutors provide lessons and tutoring as a primary or supplemental source of income, the ideal tutor to find will take a vested interest in your child’s progress and have the patience and willingness to do whatever it takes to help your child succeed.  And when you find a tutor like that, you will recognize the difference and the student will also notice the results are measurable as well. 4. Do you have any private tutoring references, or have you worked with students in a similar situation as my child? Planning For Midterms and Finals BobbiM Mar 31, 2014 Is it that time of year again? Midterms? Finals? Do you want to pull your hair out yet? Here are some tried and true tips to help you do your best. -Plan ahead. Start to rehearse and review your notes and the texts BEFORE exam week so that you can cut down on your workload for the week. Starting early is essential for classes that have cumulative exams because there is so much information to review. -Cut down on work or other commitments. If you work part-time, ask for some time off or for fewer hours at your job and make sure that your family and friends understand that you will be extra busy. Try not to add any new commitments during midterm and final time. -Get enough sleep. Pulling all-nighters for a big exam rarely pays off. Instead try to create your schedule for exam week in a way that leaves adequate sleep time. You wont do well on an exam if you are falling asleep while taking it. -Study with a partner. Misery loves company and this is never truer than during midterms and finals. Hopefully by the time midterms roll around you have found a study group that works. Study with your group or study partner to keep each other on schedule and motivated to work. -Dont panic. The whole world will not stop and does not end because of midterms and finals. If you did thy the pressure is getting to you, readjust your schedule to allow more break time and try to really relax during those breaks. Arthurs fist You probably remember growing up with this 90s show and this year, it became popular again thanks to a Twitter post.  Twitter user @AlmostJT thought the screencap of Arthurs fist from an old episode was relatable AF and posted about it. Soon, everyone was using the picture to show their Internet anger over something. We had 17 years to make a joke out of Arthurs fist. That right, this screencap is from an episode in 1999. Conceiteds pursed lips Here is another reaction that the Internet was obsessed about and honestly, it is the perfect petty  duck-face! White House memes Barack Obama and Joe Biden will be leaving the White House in January but, at least, we will always have their memes! After Trump was elected, a whole lot of memes like this one popped up where Joe wanted to prank Trump and Obama had to tell him no. This kid has been popping up all over social media for months as a reaction meme but it took me forever to figure out what his name actually is. This 5-year-old became famous thanks to his Uncle, the Vine star Nick Mastodon, who kept shoving a camera in his nephews face. There is a Gavin face for every situation and is basically the new Chloe  (BTW, that was three years ago). Water bottle flip You know something did well on the Internet when there is a Wikipedia page about it and it gets banned in schools. The water bottle flip challenge had everyone trying to flip a water bottle in the air so it would land straight up, which is actually a lot harder than it seems. Water bottle flipping became popular when a teenager at a high school in North Carolina did the act during his school talent show. The video went viral for the kids weird talent (and the students wild reaction) and soon everyone was trying to be cool like him. Remember when people used to get excited about throwing a paper ball in a trash can? Twitter 7. Dicks out for Harambe This time it wasnt a dress that divided our nation but rather the death of an animal. On May 28th, a four-year-old boy managed to fall into the enclosure of a 17-year-old western lowland gorilla named Harambe at the Cincinnati Zoo  and the whole thing was caught on camera because, you know, its 2016. As a result, Harambe had to be shot and killed so they could safely rescue the boy. This caused an outrage all over the country as people were pissed at  Cincinnati  Zoo for killing an innocent gorilla. Soon, the hatred was directed towards the mother of the boy and thousands of commenters demanded that she pay for being a bad parent. Many believed  his death was unjustified and Harambe basically became the mascot for 2016. #JusticeforHarambe #RIPHarambe The Internet, once again, didnt let something go and soon Harambe became a meme. Enter the photoshop kings. What really went viral was when  Twitter user @sexualjumanji uploaded a picture of himself holding a fake gun with the caption, “We comin with them dicks out to avenge harambe!!!” Cue everyone to start chanting dicks out for Harambe. Twitter/@HarambeDepot 8. Michael Phelps Olympic face Move over Mckayla Maroney, Michael Phelps is the new Olympic meme king! The Rio Olympics had a lot going on with scandals here and there (cough cough, Ryan Lochte) and the gold medalist summed it up with the perfect face! Apparently, he was in the zone right before his 200-meter butterfly semi-finals but everyone thought he was glaring at his rival Chad Le Clos. Me-to-me Kermit The screencap of Kermit and his evil self is from the 2012  â€œMuppets Most Wanted” film, but it recently became a meme because, I mean, we always have a Kermit meme. Twitter user Anya made a joke out of it about stealing fluffy dogs and then it went viral, becoming a meme of its own. It is basically 2016 version of the age old devil and angel on your shoulders meme. Except the devil is more like your inner conscious telling you to do something stupid because #YOLO. Making fun of this year became a meme because how else were we supposed to cope with it? Some were related to the election, some to deaths (including Harambe, of course), and some were just summing it up in total. Happy to say, this year is finally coming to an end. Four Tips for Making up Assignments In an ideal world, students would never miss class and would always get their assignments in on time. Occasionally, something unexpected comes up that interferes with school. If you miss class due to a medical emergency, a surprise job interview, or any other unforeseen circumstance, you may have an assignment or two to make up as a result. Here are four tips on how to go about making up assignments in the event you miss them. 1. Know the Importance of Your Assignments Especially in the younger grades (elementary to high school), it's helpful for students to realise just how important assignments are in the first place. If you're unsure of how relevant a certain assignment is, ask your professor to explain its importance. Knowing the part an assignment plays in the overall class can make you less likely to skip doing it. 2. Contact Your Teacher as Soon as Possible If you know ahead of time that you're going to miss a quiz or test, let your professor know. Send a politely worded email or talk to your professor before or after class. Tell him/her the reason you'll be absent and ask how you can make up the assignment. Be accommodating as far as deadlines go. Occasionally, professors may ask students to make up an assignment prior to the date of the missed class. If this is the case, be sure you are prepared to complete the work early. 3. Be Prepared for Different Make-up Policies Many instructors have different makeup policies, especially at the college level. Respect these policies, and ask your teacher any questions if you're confused about his/her policy. Oftentimes, late or made-up assignments can be submitted online, which allows students a convenient method if they are out of town or unable to turn in an assignment in person. Be aware that if it's a test or quiz you've missed, you'll probably have to go in person to take the make-up. 4. Make Friends or Acquaintances It's always good to have individuals in your classes to whom you can turn for help or advice with assignments. Even if you don't find yourself spending time with them outside of class, sharing and discussing notes is useful when it comes to making up assignments. Be sure not to use and abuse your fellow classmates, though. Show your gratitude in return for their help or advice. When enrolled in any class, try to show up for each session. Being present is the best thing you can do to succeed in the class. Your instructor will truly appreciate it, as well!
